The Legal Bit (PUWER & LOLER)

The law states that all work equipment must have pre-use & regular periodic inspections, according to the hse website:
PUWER requires that equipment provided for use at work is:
  • suitable for the intended use
  • safe for use, maintained in a safe condition and inspected to ensure it is correctly installed and does not subsequently deteriorate
  • used only by people who have received adequate information, instruction and training
  • accompanied by suitable health and safety measures, such as protective devices and controls. These will normally include guarding, emergency stop devices, adequate means of isolation from sources of energy, clearly visible markings and warning devices
  • used in accordance with specific requirements, for mobile work equipment and power presses
LOLER also requires that all equipment used for lifting is fit for purpose, appropriate for the task, suitably marked and, in many cases, subject to statutory periodic 'thorough examination'. Records must be kept of all thorough examinations and any defects found must be reported to both the person responsible for the equipment and the relevant enforcing authority.

Machine Maintenance

All machine manufacturers have a straight forward process for inspecting their machines. The workMule App has been designed to mirror this process in compliance with manufacturers manuals and warranty requirements.
Also compliant with CPA (Construction Plant-hire Association Working for plant hire professionals) terms of conditions of hire along with the general expectations of the entire plant hire industry. With pre-use inspections carried out by the end user saves time, costly repairs, downtime and helps reduce accidents in the work place.

  • Maintenance must be carried out by a competent person (who has the correct skills, experience and knowledge to do this safely).
  • Plant and work equipment must be maintained at regular intervals, utilising instructions provided by the manufacturer for guidance, most importantly if there are safety-critical features.
  • A procedure must be in place to show employees how to report a fault or damage to equipment.
  • Make sure the person carrying out the maintenance is provided with the correct equipment to reduce the risk to the maintenance team and others, schedule the works accordingly.
  • Ensure that maintenance is carried out safely, that machinery and moving parts are isolated or locked, and that flammable, explosive, or toxic items are correctly handled.
